Matrix keypad driver for uclinux

Hi,
I'm doing a school project on uclinux that runs on lpc2478. I want to connect a matrix keypad to the gpio pins of the microcontroller. After reading a bit here and a bit there, i suppose that i need a driver. My question is how can i make this driver (i suppose it's in kernel space) and how can i use it in user space to detect the key press?

Thanks for your time.
