No, I am also trying to get my onboard nforce2 sound to work.....and was curious if the other poster meant he had his SB working. I have loaded all kinds of the alsa drivers on my system. The best I have been able to get was sounds through the onboard, like the startup sound and then using XMMS the onboard spdif will work. I would like to get ALL sounds and games working through the optical out.

My sincerest apologies then. I went ahead and ordered a Cmedia 8738 and I plan to disable onboard sound. I've reached my ropes end. Good thing is it was only $7 from www.pricewatch.com. I love cheap electronics. lol

Good luck to you.

Update!

I found a solution to the problems I addressed in this thread. It was as simple as upgrading to Mandrake 10CE with KDE 3.2 and the new 2.6 kernel. All my volumes work and kmix restores all settings at startup and I don't even need ALSA. I didn't need the new soundcard and It would seem that I have just purchased a birthday present for someone. Oh well. Good thing it didn't cost too much. Cya!

Alex

Moral of this story: Never flash your bios to fix a sound problem. It's the equivalent of trying to drive a thumbtack with a sledgehammer.

So just to recap:

You have a nforce2 board and have been trying to use onboard audio
now with the upgrade to kde 3.2 you have desktop and game sounds through the spdif

just to clear my head....this has been a brutal fight.

Negative. I have an nForce1 board. As far as game sounds are concerned, they have not yet been tested. My sound battle was with Desktop and system sound only. No more, no less. I have not tested spdif in anyway shape or form, as I was just trying to get any kind of Desktop and system sound.

Have you tried starting your games soundwrapper or artsdsp before the game on the command line? For instance: soundwrapper unreal or artsdsp unreal. These could work to your advantage. Also try running the soundblaster setup program, sndconfig, from root. See if that doesn't help. I recommend using only one soundcard chipset. If you have two installed, try configuring each seperately as one might conflict with the other.

Theoretically speaking. nForce1 and nForce2 are technically the same chipset..... as Aussie mentioned earlier in the thread. This might fix your problem, or it might not. I'm also speaking from a Mandrake POV as well. There might be other posts that are more pertainent to your distro. Hope some of this helped.

Alex

Gaming Update

I got Quake3 up and running and the sound is very nice. I don't have an external decoder for SPDIF so I don't know if I have sound coming through it, but Quake 3 does run very nice.
