Hmmm.... if that really is the correct IP address, then I can only think that SNMP is not configured in the printer correctly perhaps or some other compatibility issue.
A newer printer might support SNMP v2 queries like this
Code:
snmpget -c public -v 2c 192.168.0.170 sysName.0
but since you get no response from the CUPS SNMP backend, maybe there is a compatibility issue after all.
The CUPS SNMP backend provides legacy discovery and identification of network printers using SNMPv1. When used for discovery through the scheduler, the backend will list all printers that respond to a broadcast SNMPv1 query with the "public" community name.
Well, I made one final effort. Deleted everything, printers, drivers the whole lot.
Rebooted.
Reinstalled it with the Brother Installer.
At a certain moment it asks you if you want the put in a URI. So I say yes and it gives you a choice, so I choose lpd and put in my URI (192.168.0.170/binary_p1)
It says "bad URI" and then continues installing the thing and the scanner also.
The result is the same of course: Printer may not be connected.
So I reverted to the samba-printer and that is OK.
End of story?
