Looking for a hex and disk editor

I've Googled 'hex editor linux' and 'disk editor linux' and only come up with lde and shed, both rather long in the tooth - or doesn't this matter?

I merely want to look into binary files and (ext3 and reiserfs) boot partitions rather than modify them. So far...

Where should have looked to find these?

Cheers

"od" has been around forever, and should be generally available.
Personally I use "hexdump -C ..." - for a boot sector record try
Code:
dd if=/dev/sda1 count=1 | hd -C | less
add "skip" to walk sectors as necessary. (might need root/sudo)

Thanks, syg00, but I can find no reference to a command 'hd' after my Suse bash prompt said:
hd: command not found

I'm hoping it was only a typo!

Ta,

Check your package manager for hexdump - hd is just and alias.
