Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Looking for a compact keyboard

I'm trying to find a compact keyboard, without the numeric keypad. The last time I used that thing was to enter ASCII codes under MSDOS twenty years ago.

I've tried Amazon and the sites of the main manufacturers, but the few I could find were too compact. I bought a Keysonic, only to find Fn where Ctrl belonged: every time I tried for italics, I got a 5 inserted! I finally opened it up and disabled the key, but it's not the perfect solution. A4Tech do one, but with "\" in the bottom row.

All I want is a standard board without the key pad. Has anyone here seen one? Actually, I have: the Unicomp Mighty Mouse, complete with buckling springs, just like that wonderful Model M I used to have! But at $99 plus shipping plus 15% tax, that's a bit much with the £ so low.

I have an "Adesso Mini White PS/2 Keyboard, ACK-595" that I've had for quite some time and love. It scrunches the 'home', 'pgup', 'pgdn' and 'end' against the right edge, but it has a nice feel to the keys.

Google 'ACK-595' and it'll bring up a lot of sources. See the first one (amazon) and you can enlarge te picture of the keyboard an see if it is too small. It's 11.2"(L) x 5.5"(W) x 1.1"(H) (29cm? by 14.5cm? -- sorry, I'm not metrically inclined, but I think that's close.) There's both a ps/2 and USB version.

I would assume you could find a source near you.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the picture at Adesso's site suggests they have the odd keys in row A that I hate. Actually, it didn't seem to be available in the UK anyway: the USA has a much bigger range of computer stuff than we do, and often at half the price :-(
