Linux on Toshiba Tecra 500cs
I don't know if you are still interested, but I figured that I would post this in case anyone else may want this information. I have finally had a lot of success in running Mandrake Linux 9.2 on the Toshiba Tecra 500CS. I tried Peanut Linux, Slackware, SuSE, Damnsmalllinux, and finally Mandrake. The main problem was how to get the installation process going without consuming too much of the hardrive. I was able to get Damnsmalllinux, but was unable to get additional servers running without some flakiness (SSH, SAMBA, VNC) - I could be more specific if anyone is interested.
Let me cut to the chase:
To get Mandrake running, I did a network install from NFS (Since I only have 64MB RAM, ftp was not an option). I created the following partition sizes: / 838; /home 247.73; swap 272.5. I run SAMBA, SSH, VNC. I also run Mozilla Firebird as the browser. I use IceWM as the desktop. I actually runs pretty well. If anyone is interested I will post more, but for now my kids want me to build them a play house - gtg.
