Linux Installation error

Hello ,

We are in the process of testing SLES 10 SP1 installation, onto a new system.

Initially the installation got failed at the start giving following error :

"Could not find the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 Installation CD. Activating Manual setup program."

What is interesting to notice is , if we use SLES 10 SP2 to boot the system upto the Installation menu and then replace the CD with SLES 10 SP1 media, the installation proceeds as normal without any error.

Not sure that could be the problematic thing over here.

Does it mean with SP1 , no cdrom/cd or hard disk gets detected ?

Any guesses ?

Thanx,
Admin

Hi,

I suspect the sp2 has setup things/recognized things to allow the setup to continue. When you replace sp2 media with the sp1 media the error or faults have already been taken care off. I've used older Gnu/Linux install media to boot when a legacy issue would not allow me to continue with a newer Gnu/Linux.

Most times this is caused because of recognition of certain hardware & lack of drivers.

You are correct as me too think same.
But now my initial aim is to recognise those missing pieces.
I wonder how I should go about , whether its cdrom drivers or hard disks drivers that are missing or something else?
I still feel its the sata drivers which are missing. But then again how do I find out ?

Thanx,

Hi,

Just continue with the sp1 install and see what you need to tweak the system after the install. Why not just stay with sp2?

I did not get it correctly when you asked to find post install what bits are missing>? How do you know what all drivers are missing after the installation? Eg if its sata drivers , where to find what is missing.

Why not just stay with sp2

We must stick to SP1, primary reason is , we have a customised installer exactly based upon SP1 .
If we are to choose SP2 then we will have to make n number of changes in the customised installer to bring it to SP2 level.

If you experience problems with the sp1 install then look at 'dmesg' & '/var/log' to get an idea as to the problem. Speculation doesn't solve a problem. Active interaction or tracing a diagnosis will lead to what is necessary to solve issues. Match your hardware specs with drivers in use. Properly configured?

Post install, are you experiencing a problem or issue with particular hardware? Error messages? What if speculation does no good. Specifics please!
