Life In Chaos: Problems installing NV TNT2 driver

Hi to all
I'm level 2 newbie!

I tried several ways to install my Nvidia driver unsucessfuly
I tried everything written in almost every thread on almost every forum available
different stories and myths I was told, but here I am here waiting for your help!

I have MDK OE 10.1 and RIVA TNT2 before trying to help this is what I already tried:

Installing the offical Nvidia drivers (i tried both 6629 and 6111)
editing XF86Config / xorg.conf
adding "nvidia" line in modprobe.preload

the problem is a black screen after loading all the devices
when I type
Code:
 startx
all I get is a black screen
but when I switch back "nvidia" in xorg.conf the X works but
Code:
glxgears
doesn't

HELP ME PLEASE!!!
How much a man must suffer to get his linux working 100%
I haaateeeeeeeee Windows!!!!

Use the 2.4 kernel and sources. www.minion.de for older drivers if needed.

You could also use the native kernel driver if you weren't concerned about 3d. Since it's a TNT2, I'm guessing you aren't... (just kidding).

Do you mean to downgrade my kernel??
oh man! It's way above my head !
I desprately need the openGL!
You know it will take 50 years for linux to compile the kernel on my 350MHz machine
and I don't know (I dont think I will) how to.

btw: I downloaded 2 RPM packages compatible with my kernel and distrib
NVIDIA_KERNEL****MDK
NVIDIA_GLX****MDK
but the glx doesn't seem to work!
is there anything I must do in order to enable the glx???
p.s: module glx is enabled in xorg.conf
and what the h311 is rivafb (the setup tells me to disable it but I must recompile the kernel)
Thanx again!
and for the nvidia people: WHY DONT YOU FIX THE PROBLEM!

I'm sorry. The other outlier of hope would be that mandrake's kernel source is screwing you. They have a nvidia kernel compile that conflicts with the install of the nvidia native driver. Make sure that isn't the one you are using.

I am making the assumption here that you installed the kernel-source and nvidia native driver properly. Did "modprobe nvidia" work without errors? If no, then the driver is not installed properly.
