Thanks for your reply but I've already been there and although it allows you to select Linux as the OS it doesn't offer any version of Linux and downloads the Mac driver
I kinda thought that was the case I searched as well and couldn't find anything was hoping someone knew something I didn't, looks like this printer's just a door stop
I have cups installed and I've tried to install from my printer settings but there is no Z1480 driver listed I've tried all the Z class drivers that are listed and many more including generic drivers I've even tried Dell drivers (which I believe are just repackaged Lexmarks) and nothing will spring this thing into life, I've checked all over the internet and although I've read of many people trying to install this printer I've came across no one who has managed to do it

Time to get a new printer, a bit more modern than the one you have.
Check in the CUPS list to find the good printer(s) (or the one you need) knowing that when you have bought it, it will work.

Yeah you're right, normally I wouldn't touch any Lexmark printer but I saw it at a boot sale and bought it for £3, I knew I was taking a risk but you win some you lose some

I do not know how much this printer (PIXMA iP4850) is in Scotland where you are, but I have bought this printer myself from brand new (it did not cost a lot either) and it works perfectly with any linux system once you have set it up. If you do go and get this printer you might want to consider a CISS (Continuous Ink Supply System) of which I have also, it has saved me quite a few hundred euros over the years I have been using it. The CISS is a bit messy to set up at first, but once it is set up it pays for itself many times over. But you can select your printer from them (CISS) also if you need to.
