Hi all!
Long time since I've been here, and I'm trying to get linux working again.
I've got Knoppix running from a USB stick, on my Asus F5SL laptop. Currently using the NOAGP boot option to get it to boot successfully.
Now my big problem is wireless. Yes, I can hear your moans already, from what I've seen it's no pretty thing to deal with under linux (and no doubt even less so under a live distro!).
This is what I've tried so far (this is done under a root console):
Code:
>lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Unknown device 0671
00:01.0 PCI bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] PCI-to-PCI bridge
00:02.0 ISA bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Unknown devce 0968 (rev 01)
00:02.5 IDE interface: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 5513 [IDE] (rev 01)
00:03.0 USB controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.0 Controller (rev 0f)
00:03.1 USB controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.0 Controller (rev 0f)
00:03.3 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 2.0 Controller
00:04.0 Ethernet controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 191 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (rev 02)
00:05.0 IDE interface: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Unknown device 1183 (rev 03)
00:06.0 PCI bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] PCI-to-PCI bridge
00:07.0 PCI bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] PCI-to-PCI bridge
00:0f.0 Audio device: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Unknown device 7502
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Unknown device 95c4
02:00.0 Network controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. Unknown device 0024 (rev 01)
>iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
>ls /ramdisk/etc | grep ndis
>dmesg | grep ndis
>ndiswrapper -i /cdrom/WLAN_NE-770_XP_081015/ndis5x/net5416.inf
Forcing parameter MapRegisters from 256 to 64
[NB: Above line repeats several times]
>ls /ramdisk/etc/ndiswrapper/
net5416
>ndiswrapper -l
net5416 : driver installed
device (168C:0024) present
>modprobe ndiswrapper
Unfortunately that's as far as it gets, the terminal seems to stop responding at that point and nothing more happens.
Interestingly if I open another root console:
Code:
>dmesg | grep ndis
ndiswrapper version 1.32 loaded (preempt=yes,smp=yes)
>iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
also interesting is if instead of the modprobe line above I use the options for dry-run and verbose:
Code:
>modprobe -n -v ndiswrapper
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.19/misc/ndiswrapper.ko
No errors displayed, command seems to exit fine.
I've downloaded madwifi also but to be honest I have no idea where to start with it! I tried "make" in the root of the wadwifi folder, but I get two errors:
Code:
/bin/sh: line 0: cd: /lib/modules/2.6.19/build: No such file or directory
Makefile.inc:66: *** /lib/modules/2.6.19/build is missing, please set KERNELPATH. Stop.
Can anyone help me with either approach? Anything would be useful and appreciated!
