KdeTv and XawTV cause my video to shut down

I bought and installed a Pinnacle PCTV Pro card.
With tvtime, it works fine - I get a picture when I hook it up to my video camera.

However,
Xawtv and kdetv cause the video system to totally shut down, meaning the
monitor goes blank and then into standby. I have had to do a couple
of dirty shutdowns because of it.
The chipset is bt878 which is supported in Linux, and
works with tvtime. But I don't seem to have the capability to capture
in tvtime. I would need one of the other two programs.

What is going on? I am using Mandrake 10.1. ATI Radeon 9250, 128 MB
3d works, 512 MB RAM, AMD Sempron 2400

Should I reinstall Linux around the new hardware?
