is there any shell command to read and write data from parallel and serial port?

I want to send data from parallel or serial port of my PC.Once I used C language to program,I open the /dev/xxx and send/read data.
But I want to know if there is any alterntive way to use shell to send/read data.

You might be able to do what you want with minicom. See:
man minicom

Hi, I discovered this one only last week. Just google for parashell. It provides two shell commands - parashell can write to the parallel port, and pin can read it.
