Internal modem / serial port problem

Hi,

have finally taken the plunge and replaced Windows with Linux. Managed to get it installed after only two attempts. But now I'm having issues with my internal modem.

Windows confirmed that the internal modem was on COM3. But now that I've got Linux running, it's only reporting two serial ports - Dmesg only mentions ttyS0 and 1, wvdialconfig only looks in 0 and 1, and setserial reports an unknown UART on ttyS2 - which the Serial Howto on the linux documentation project says likely means there isn't any serial port.

Should I throw the modem away and give it up as a bad job, or is there some possibility that I can make it work if I only knew how?

It may be a winmodem. If the modem documentation specifies a minimum processor speed then it is probably a winmodem. They save a dollar on the manufacturing cost by having the computers processor convert the noises on the phone line into data.

Look at
www.linmodems.org and search for information on your paticular brand of modem.

ttys2 is COM3

don't forge that you start counting with 0 (zero) in binary/digital.
Also the UART device is a modem.

Regards,
Al
