i have a dell dimension 8100, and the stupid 250w (thanks dell!) power supply died. to make it worse, dell designed their cases/motherboards so that you can only buy one specific power supply (that a third party makes, btw) for $100.
i have found a deal for a barebone system that after rebates is $100.
my dimension 8100 is a P4. this new system is AMD sempron 3300.
i am planning on transplanting most of the hardware, including cd/dvd drives, floppy, a few PCIs, and the hard drive.
now, my question, which i fear i already know the answer to.
i'm running mandriva 2006. will it cease to work once it is installed in the AMD sempron system and need to be reinstalled, since it was originally installed on a P4 system?
if so, will my /home directory survive such a reinstallation? i know it has before, but i've never switched processors before!
i look forward to an answer, as my rebated barebone system is running out of time to be bought.
If you just have a stock Mandriva install then there is no reason why it will not work just fine.
The only thing that won't work is software you have built from source using a specific cflag for your processor, ie -march=pentium4. If you have built nothing from source, or if you have built it from source using more generic x86 flags, then you are golden.
Edit: keep in mind your kernel too. If you are using a stock kernel from mandriva, again, you should be fine, but if you built a custom one for your P4 you will have to boot up with a livecd and build a new kernel before it will boot. Also, you will presumambly have a different chipset on your mobo, so you will have to keep that in mind if you want DMA to work.
