intel 965gm express graphics chipset + fedora 7

hi ho,

I've got the majority of stuff working fairly well on my dell d830 laptop, with a couple exceptions, one being the 3d graphics eye-candy $bling$ that can be accomplished with compiz fusion or beryl or the built in desktop effects that are available under the system tab in f7.

I have been looking online at lots of differing methods to get the cube desktop (etc) to work but I'm not having much luck. Here's what I have so far...

well I've made some progress, I'm able to actually run glxinfo and glxgears now, but when I try and enable desktop effects I still get the error that desktop effects cannot be enabled.

So it would seem that glx is working on some level, but I still can't enable desktop-effects, unsure as to why that is...

is why you can't enable desktop effects. It doesn't pick up 3D acceleration .

Check to make sure you have the mesa packages installed. You may also have to load a module or two at startup. Try:

Code:
modprobe agpgart
Code:
modprobe intel-agp
Code:
modprobe drm
Code:
modprobe i915
http://intellinuxgraphics.org/install.html

well that's interesting;

[root@id10t ~]# modprobe agpart
FATAL: Module agpart not found.
[root@id10t ~]# modprobe intel-agp
FATAL: Module intel_agp not found.
[root@id10t ~]# modprobe drm
[root@id10t ~]# modprobe i915
[root@id10t ~]# modprobe agpgart
FATAL: Module agpgart not found.

so drm and i915 are found...

I have seen any reference to intel-agp and in dmesg I do see entries for agpart (below)

[root@id10t ~]# dmesg | grep agpgart
Linux agpgart interface v0.102 (c) Dave Jones
agpgart: Detected an Intel 965GM Chipset.
agpgart: Detected 7676K stolen memory.
agpgart: AGP aperture is 256M @ 0xe0000000

looks like i915 is loaded as well;

[root@id10t ~]# dmesg | grep i915
[drm] Initialized i915 1.10.0 20070209 on minor 0

drm loads it in fact:
[root@id10t ~]# dmesg | grep drm
[drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810
[drm] Initialized i915 1.10.0 20070209 on minor 0

but I dont see anything at all for intel-agp

I tried to yum install intel-agp but no packages were found, I'm confused because i915 is a driver for an older chipset than I have, mine is a i965GM, which supposedly is the first chipset to have all this fancy support for linux distros, but it's a total pain in my ass to get working.

From my experience, AccelMethod need to set to "EXA" in order to it run smoothly for Compiz.

Well, I know i915 is used for the 915/945 chipsets, but I'm not sure that will apply to the 965 series.

The only thing I think think of is install any mesa packages and install the xorg-x11-drv-i810 package. Since I noticed that this package still points to "i810", if 3D still doesn't work after installing those packages, then try pointing the Driver in your xorg.conf to "i810".

I am using 965GM, is working fine, and yes i915 is the kernel module you need.

Try set your AccelMethod to "EXA". Maybe what works for me will work for you.

that's interesting information, I"m currently running 8 test 2 on the laptop and I'm happy to say that there is full support for the 965GM chip set included in it, all the 3d stuff is working great, out of the box.

I don't know if I'm going to fall back to f7 but if I do I will try this resolve.

thanks!

Look here...

You need certain versions of packages to get it working nicely.
