Hi all.

I've chanced upon the SOLUTION to this intel 82865 problem on dell gx270's. This problem plagued me for the past few weeks already.
I'm running Fedora core 1, and applied this patch. It's successful and I can push it to 1024x768 on 24 bit color.

Instructions and installation are on this website.
http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/linux/fc1_intel_video_fix.htm

Hope this helps!

Talking A02 GX270 BIOS

Hey, can someone tell me the features of the A02 GX270 BIOS. What upgrades were there from the A01 GX270 BIOS.

Thanks

I just saw, that a 'downgrade' of the bios is not necessary anymore
You can also upgrade to A04. It works fine!

Dell support page writes:

The following changes have been made to the A03 BIOS to create the A04:

1. Fixed 1M/8M switch for non-Windows OS.
2. ...

The file is:

GX270A04.EXE

and can be found on the Dell support page
http://support.ap.dell.com/ap/en/filelib/

Best regards

Yup, I can verify that. Upgraded to BIOS A04 (on an Optiplex GX270) and set the AGP aperture to 8 MB (it's set to 1 MB by default.)

Currently viewing my new RedHat 9 install through a 1280x1024, 24-bit color porthole. And it looks much better than Windows.

I was having a similiar problem in Mandrake with a Dell G270, Before I went the route of back dating the bios I set the video ram to 8mb instead of 1 and it works.

video buffer in bios

I saw this problem on the 865G, and having been pointed toward the bios by this forum, I played around.

It seemed to work after changing the buffer for video in the bios to 8MB from 1MB.

using a Dell Dimension 3000
Running Debian Linux testing
kernel 2.6.8-1
