Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

In Search Of [Free & Open] Diagnostic Software

My basic problem: an nVidia NForce2 (AC-97) sound card that doesn't make any sound. The problem may be installation, or may be hardware. I can't get it to squeek, no matter what I select under my preferences.

SYSTEM: Ubuntu 7.10, Kernel 2.6.22-14-generic, GNOME 2.20.0
Full lspci output at end of this post.

To address the possible hardware problem: Long long ago, one could get "CHECKIT" and diagnose basic hardware. Of course, I doubt CHECKIT ever heard of soundcards.

Does anyone know of free & open programs that can get in and diagnose the hardware at a pretty basic level?

TIA!
