IDE controller not recognized

Hi,

I have an old compaq computer acting as a fileserver with Ubuntu Gutsy Server.

My problem is the built-in PCI-IDE/SATA Controller which isn't recognized (or at least the IDE HDD connected to it)
It is based on a VIA chip and 100% linux supported. With an older installation of same OS I had no problems, as the card was built in during installation process, as it wasn't with the actual installation.

For sure I don't wish to set up an all new installation, and do configs etc. again. Does anybody know a tip how to get the card recognized?

Btw. With cfdisk, and mkfs also, I can acces the disk connected with the controller, using /dev/sdc. On the other side, blkid doesn't return the disk, and it is impossible to mount it.

Cheers,
Jens

If cfdisk and mkfs can see the disk as /dev/sdc the controller should be working ok. blkid shows partitions, so if it doesn't show partitions on /dev/sdc I'd suppose there aren't any, and then of course there's nothing to mount.

Are you sure that the disk has any partitions on it? If you are, is it possible that they are formatted in a file system your kernel might not support?

Hi,

There are primary and extended partitions on it with Linux filesystem, formatted ext3. So I think there should be no problem with it.
