Ide cdrom and sata dvd not playing nicely

I can't get both a ide cdrom and a new sata dvd burner to work at the same time. I can get them to work by themselves, but when they are both installed the dvd burner behaves oddly.

If I boot with no disks installed the dvd drive doesn't get recognized and won't mount a disk, the cdrom works fine.

If I boot with a disk in the dvd, it gets recognized and mounts the disk- sort of... The disk reads fine, but only that disk. If I try to eject the disk the tray opens, and then closes immediately. If I do manage to grab the disk and get it out, the drive doen't recognize the absence. If I get a new disk in, this isn't recognized either. The cdrom, of course, works fine

I'm having the same issue on my OpenSuse installtion, i've tried both Suse 10.1 and 10.2

If you try to play a DVD movie in the PATA/IDE drive is it choppy?
