im not too sure what the other one is you want to see. i will search and see if i can find out what you need.
Thanks so much.
Try the file as I have modified it in your post above. The second file I need is the /var/log/Xorg.0.log which is the log of when X starts but do not post it until you try this as I think it should work better with this the other part you posted looks reasonable for not compiling yourself.

Ok,
I rewrote the old file (made backup) and saved it. i did ctrl-alt-bkspace and logged in again..tried the GEARS screen saver and i got the exact same thing.. 43-45fps.
this sucks..i have always had a bad impression of linux because i was never able to get my video card working well. I am not giving up though (unless you give up..than im stuck again)

so..you want me to post the log?
thanks
Yeah definitely there is something weird going on here I will have to see it to figure it out hopefully. BTW when you run the glxgears do you run it full screen if so that is not how you do the measurements it should only be done with the little window that comes up.

Hi there is nothing in there really that stands out for the font error do you mean this part.
Code:
(WW) The directory "/usr/share/X11/fonts/cyrillic" does not exist.
Entry deleted from font path.
(WW) The directory "/usr/share/X11/fonts/CID" does not exist.
Entry deleted from font path.
(WW) `fonts.dir' not found (or not valid) in "/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/CID".
Entry deleted from font path.
(Run 'mkfontdir' on "/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/CID").
If so then that is normal the CID and cyrllic never seem to be there on my system either so I just put a # in front of the lines for them in the xorg.conf. A couple of other things you can try to speed it up is putting lines like this in your Section Driver.
And create a file /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia then add this for the contents.
Code:
## Added by me for fast writes
options nvidia NVreg_EnableAGPFW=1
Now I am not sure how Ubuntu does if if you can get to the root command line then use /etc/init.d/?dm stop replacing the ? with k, g, x depending on which manager is used to stop X and rmmod nvidia to unload the driver then modprobe nvidia to have the driver loaded using the new options if no command line then restart the computer.
i tried everything with the exceptiong on nvLOGO (i kinda like it for some reason 0
i dont know what to do. This sucks. I mean..my video card is pretty good..it should be able to a lot better than 40 fps.
maybe ill try mandriva and see what that does (althought i never really liked the bigger distros...i like the smaller ones. Ill try it out anyway and see if it improves video perfomance at all.
Thanks for all your help. I will post back my results with mandriva once im done downloading 3 cd's
That is the program you use to test whether it is working, open a console window and type in glxgears then look at the numbers it gives you it should look similar too this.
Code:
[07:26 PM Thu Mar 02: stephen @ ~]
>$ glxgears
16842 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3368.385 FPS
16806 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3361.099 FPS
16876 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3375.041 FPS
16897 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3378.661 FPS
16862 frames in 5.0 seconds = 3371.157 FPS
X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).
now is it the lower the number the better? or the higher the numbre the better?
is that little windows supposed to pop up like that? (like the little screensaver thingie).
do these numbers look right? or are they slow?
thanks again
That's what it's supposed to do. I don't have that card so I can't say for sure, but those numbers look about right. The higher number is better. With my onboard Intel i915 chipset I get around 1200,
