Is it possible to get this multi-function device's scanner working in Mandrake 10.1? I have installed Xsane, Kooka, all the backends and HPOJ-driver & service. It still doesn't get recognized.
Yes you can.
Check first you have sane installed, Xsane is just a frontend for sane.
Also check ptal-init starts before cups as opposite to what suggested in the official HPOJ documentation.
Hope this helps
Ciao

Sane and all backends are installed.
But I didn't quite understand what do you mean or what is "ptal-init"?
I guess I install this (scanner too) from Printerdrake in Mandrake, not from Scannerdrake like normal scanners?
hpoj is a "driver package" that installs some scripts in your /etc/rc.d/init.d directory.
The script starting hpoj is called ptal-init and necessarely it must be started at boot time.
I'm not very experienced with Mandrake, but as far i can remember you should have somewhere an rc.3 and rc.5 directories.
Those directories contain the scripts ( or better links to the scripts) starting the corresponding services for runlevels 3 and 5.
You'll find several scripts with a leading S followed by a number. These dirctories are lexically parsed, so if you need one script to be started before one other just give it a lower number. Ptal-init should be started after cups (I was wrong in my previous post).
Hope this helps

OK, understood and clear. Thank you for your help.
I'm familiar with the boot scripts, just didn't know the HPOJ-service was called ptal-init. Will check again if I get it working in few days (the computer is far away).
