HP/Colorado 8GB TR-4 IDE Tape on RedHat 9.0

I can't get my HP/Colorado 8GB Travan-4 IDE tape drive to work on RedHat 9.0. I've tried both with and without SCSI emulation and get the same results:

# mt -f /dev/st0 status
/dev/st0: Input/output error

The drive is recognized at boot time. From dmesg:

hdc: attached ide-scsi driver.
scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices
Vendor: HP Model: COLORADO 8GB Rev: 2.06
Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02

<snip>

st: Version 20030406, bufsize 32768, max init. bufs 4, s/g segs 16
Attached scsi tape st0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Greg
