How to tell what XF86config file I'm using?

First off I'd like to say "hi" to all board members I'm a Linux newbie & am giving Mandrake 9.2 a try. I am 90% complete in installing Nvidia's 4496 drivers for my GeForce Ti4200 & need to know which file I have to configure to complete the install process. I am confused because there are 4 similar files in my X11 directory & I do not know which one Mandrake is "using":
  • XF86Config-4
  • XF86Config-4.old
  • XF86Config.old
  • XF86Config

Which file do I need to edit & replace nv with nvidia? Also, how do I know the drivers are successfully installed? I have read members use something called glxgears or something like that, but I cannot find it

The file you should modify is XF86Config-4. There is a utility you can use for modifying it, to use it enter xf86config (notice the lower case) at the command line. Alternatively you can modify the file yourself, if you feel OK with that.

Glxgears is a little program that is useful for testing whether your 3d acceleration is working. If it is working then you should get thousands of frames per second. If it isn't working then you'll probably get hundreds instead. Just enter glxgears in a console window to use it.

Thank you ever so much! Tux Racer runs great & I get 3100's in glxgears. I wish I could get a driver specific to my Viewsonic P95f+b CRT monitor. I think Mandrake just sees it as a "generic" monitor or something. Well, time to tackle that & my non-working Audigy. Once again, thanks a lot!

With regards to your monitor, I found the specifications:

http://www.viewsonic.com/products/cr...lusb.htm#specs

Horiz range = 30 - 110KHz
Vert range = 50 - 160Hz

If you enter those values in when you run xf86config you should end up with some ModeLines that are suitable for your monitor.

Good luck!
