How to migrate linux disk to a new box

Hi can someone help me out, im not that familiar with linux, so please bare with me..

I have an old RedHat Linux which was configured by one of my friends which has numerous MySQL DB in it and the other day my hardware suddenly went dead (Motherboard) so basically what i did is i tried to move my old HDisk to another box with new cpu and board, rightnow when i try to boot my linux it stops in the middle, my hunch is that it must have something to do with the hardware, so how do you reconfigure linux to recognize new hardware like CPU, Motherboard, etc., considering that the old devices are no longer available..

thanks.

Did not say the version of Redhat so not sure if there are any tools that can help. But most hardware is defined in /etc/modules.conf file if that is what it uses. Newer redhat and redhat clones use /etc/modprobe.conf. They also use a tool called kudzu to help detect new hardware or changes on hardware at boot. Then modifeis /etc/modprobe and maybe a few other files. If you boot up with a linux boot cd or floppy and mount the partition that contains /etc directory. You can edit /etc/modules.conf to reflect the new hardware. But that may depend on the kernel as well. If new hardware then the 2.4 kernel since Redhat 9 and eariler to Redhat 6.0 or 5.0 used may not be supportted. You may have to upgrade to a newer 2.6 kernel but will require many changes as well on the Redhat distro and that may depend on which version. It can be done but there is so many things to check and do that there is no easy quick fix.

My idea for a quick fix would be to install a newer distro of Redhat like Fedora Core 5 and setup mysql on it. Copy the databases over and restart mysql and use the IP from the dead machine.
