How to install a printer driver to a Linux print server?
Hello,
I have a Synology DS110+ NAS which has print server feature. It is powered with a lightweight Linux version. I also have a Canon LBP2900 printer which is compatible with Linux, and I can use it with the proprietary driver if connected directly to my computer. As the NAS doesn't have this proprietary driver, it doesn't detect the printer as such when plugged in. How can I install this driver on the NAS?
Thanks,
I assume you can install something on that station...if so, try the Gutenprint set and its drivers. Does it have a web interface? Guess so. Set the printer up, make sure it's shared (a small footnote, but so often overlooked) accross the LAN...
Your printer does not figure in this matrix...though, this page says that USB printer can be seen...
These are loose thoughts and may not help you...I had the same challenge, but I installed a dedicated server (Arch Linux, Gutenprint) on a redundant box...THAT does work smoothly...

...this kinda narrows down the options...bummer...
If you really need one central point to print to, you could set up an old PC to act as a print server. That's pretty easy to do...
Yes, but this would use energy (~30 euros/year). I think I'll just plug the printer to my regular notebook for now...
You're right, that IS the best option. My server does more than print alone, so that's okay, but in your case, just hooking it up to your laptop is the best option, though you can share the thing on your laptop to be used by others (if any)...
