Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

How to disable a device during system startup

Hello all,

I am using Mandrake Linux 10.0. I was wondering how to disable a device from being loaded during system startup. Basically I want to find out if there is a program similar to Windows Device Manager for Linux other than harddrake. You know harddrake is pretty limiting on what you can do. In Windows Device Manager, I can disable a device and also enable a device on the fly. I want to find out how to do this under Linux. I would be great if I could also create different hardware profiles for different users.

Thanks for any help.
