Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Question How to change a SCSI ID?

I'm having troubles with my backup software (tapeware) and my tapedrive interacting with each other, and they recommend lowering my scsi id and few other things. I'm running Redhat 9 with a scsi sony sdt-9000 tapedrive, and using kernel 2.4.20-31.9 and have no clue how to do this. I do have SCSI_mod and IDE-SCI as modules.

This info comes right from their tech support.

1. Set the tape drive SCSI ID as low as possible, avoiding 0 or 1, which are
usually reserved for bootable devices.
2. Set INITIATE SYNC NEGOTIATION for the SCSI ID of the tape drive to off.
3. Set INITIATE WIDE NEGOTIATION to off for controllers with a wide bus.
4. Set MAXIMUM SYNC TRANSFER RATE to the lowest possible value for the SCSI ID
of the tape drive.
5. DISCONNECT must be enabled for all tape drive SCSI IDs.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Homer

Usually changing the scsi id is a hardware thing. It is usually done by setting the jumpers on the card itself. I may be wrong, nut that's how it used to be done on HP boxes.

Check the manual for the tape drive. It will show you the location of the SCSI ID jumpers.

You also need to verify the SCSI terminator is enabled if this is the last device or only device on the chain.

The other settings I believe are configured via the SCSI controller's BIOS setup. During the boot process you should see the controller scan for devices and how to access the BIOS setup. The exact method depends on the controller.
