how do resize partitions to prepare for a dual boot?
Okay, I think that I've looked at old threads long enough to warrant posting.
I have Mandrake 10 installed on one 40gb harddrive with root swap and home partitions.
Here's what I want to do:
install RH9 and dual boot with Mandrake. I want to retain my data in Mandrake.
I think I need to resize the partition to make room for RH9, so I booted with Knoppix and tried to use qtparted to do so. It gave me an error, which I think means that it can't resize ext3 filesystems, at least thats what I gather from other posts. As I understand it I should use tune2fs to convert to ext2.
How wrong am I? Is there a better way?
If I am right, then how do I do it?
i dont think you can use diskdrake to resize a partition because you need to unmount the partition first. since im trying to resize home, obviously i cant unmout it.
Whatever you do and however you do it BACKUP any critical data. Nothing should go wrong, but moving/resizing partitions always means a (small) risk of data loss or corruption. Also, If you are going to resize / move more than one partition do it one at a time and check evereyting is OK after every change you make.
The directory /home can be unmounted if there is no users loggged in except root. QTparted should be able to install in Mandrake Linux 10 without having any dependecies although running GUI (X Window Server) as root is dangerous. If you made two partitions (/ and swap) to install Linux, then you will have to use a LIVE CD such as SystemRescueCd which is the home of QTparted too.
