How can I figure out whether a sound card is being used?

Code:
 cat /proc/asound/timers
used to report 'PLAYING' when a sound device is being used, but that's stopped working.

Programatically. I schedule a switch from what the computer's playing to what's on the radio. I pause playing audio and sound an alert.
