help with new hd

Installed a new hd.
It shows up in file manager as being locked.
Properties show it as being owned by 'root:root'

As root # chown user:root /dev/hdb does not change the ownership.
I get a message that says I do not have permission to change ownership.

How do I solve this?

Check that the permissions for the MOUNT POINT (folder) for the drive are sufficiently set to allow your user account to enter the drive. If necessary, as root, change the folder permissions.
If the drive is mounted automatically upon boot, then this should solve the problem.

If it does not, check the man page for fstab (man fstab) and check the USER and USERS options to see if one of these will give you the permissions you need.

Also, you may want to change the /dev node to root:disk and then make sure YOUR user account is a member of the DISK group.

Does this help?

I suggest that you partition the drive and format the filesystems. Then you can set the ownership of the mount points for the filesystems to whatever you want.

PROBLEM SOLVED

Went into fstab and changed from auto to user.
I then used chown user:root /dev/hdb and it worked.

Thanks for the suggestion GrapefruiTgirl.

Good stuff, glad you got it figured out.

Incidentally, just for information sake, AUTO is the default when drives are mounted using DEFAULTS. NOAUTO would cause it to not mount upon boot, if you were specifying all options manually..

So you could use AUTO and USER if need be.

Best regards,
Sasha
