I am running SuSE 9.1 on an amd64. It boots and works fine as long as I pass acpi=no. I do have some issues. My wifi card that works in the 32 bit no longer works. I think this has to do with the 64bit version not working well with a 16bit card. There are a few other issues also. Most deal with software packages that just won't run at all, or do not work fully. I have yet gone out to see how you start an app using the 32 bit libraries, but I know that is what needs to be done. Another issue has been using the YOU online update. That works fine, but after getting an update to the kernel version, I end up rolling back to the kernel that came stock. I've recompiled the present kernel, and had no problems. I also can not seem to be able to create a partition and put an XFS file system on it. It simply bombs out completely. That may not be an affect from the 64 bit, but I was able to use XFS on 8.0, 8.1, 9.0 versions (32bit). I believe some of the issues deal with the 64 bit version, but they could possibly stem from the hardware on the laptop itself. I have seen a lot of posts about some issues with the 9.1 version, both 32 bit and 64 bit.
It's hard to really condemn or praise the 64bit version because there is no set control over what is causing what. In other words... Is it not working in all aspects because it is 64bit version, because it is SuSE 9.1, or because of hardware. My other machines (desktops) can not be used for comparisons sice they are all different. There are a lot of posts at SuSE's lists.suse.com about the amd64 version, so I believe it is a good part of some of my problems.
I am using it right now, so it is not a complete wash out. It is just a lot of the features I want just aren't working correctly.
