Hardware upgrade gotchas?
I have a Dell Precision 690 workstation that I have installed Fedora 23 (Server Edition) for use as a file-share and media server on my LAN
The current config is: Intel Xeon 3.0 Ghz dual core cpu with 4Gb ram and 2x 500Gb Hdd. Everything is working fine, but for streaming media, I want to make sure everything is a smooth as possible.
I have purchased a 2nd CPU matched to the first, 16Gb ram and 2 additional hard drives for storage.
Are there any gotchas I need to be aware of when installing these hardware upgrades?
or PLAN B: would it just be easier to backup my data from the server, install the upgrades and do a clean install?
Installing the RAM and Drives should be easy, it's the addition of a 2nd CPU that I have never done before on a working system that has me a little hesitant.
I've done this same upgrade (the CPU portion at least) on an older Dell server which I've long forgotten the specs of, and had zero issues with it, at least while running slackware. Assuming that Fedora 23 uses an SMP capable kernel (and I believe nearly all modern distros do) you should have no issues whatsoever with doing the CPU upgrade and shouldn't have to start with a clean install. This of course, is based on my experience, ymmv.....

Cool, thanks for the affirmation, that is kinda my working theory. Especially since it is a 64 bit distro and a 64 bit/ dual core processor, it would follow that SMP would be enabled by default.
I will say this for the folks at Fedora, they really have the cockpit down tight. nice interface, very understandable, dare I say intuitive(?). It has made remote admin of the server, a dream.
