Hard disk space mismatch

I'm running Debian experimental on a homecooked 2.6.10-ac kernel.
I'm using two vanilla 7200 RPM IDE hard drives, one of which is NOT automount.

df shows the following
/dev/hda1 55748380 37701256 15215268 72% /
tmpfs 257908 0 257908 0% /dev/shm

When I look in konqueror, it tells me there are 14.5 GB free out of 53.2 GB total, but when I actually calculate usage, I only come up with 16.9 GB (or so) in use.

I forced a fsck, that turned up zilch.

I googled and searched to no avail. But I may just be an idiot and have used the wrong keywords.

I do transfer large files and torrents back and forth from this machine, and fear something has "gummed" my drive up.

I know for a fact I have more space than this. I have deleted most of the non system/program files from my HD, and am pretty sure that at the very most, I could be burning 25 gigs.

What should I do to resolve my problem?
Thank you for any help or attention you can give.

Do a search on defragment or defragmentation, there is a post here about defragging after using torrent. I read it but can't remember the reason or if defragging was the solution.

Thanks. It looks like exim went totally bonkers and dumped 19 gigs worth of junk in my HD (that konqueror didn't detect). I will try defragging after I kill and eradicate exim.
