Getting joystick support

Does anyone know what I need to do in order to get a 4-button, 3-axis joystick working in Linux? I did a search and discovered that I need to use modprobe joydev. But, is that all there is to it or are there specific drivers that I need to load? My joystick is just a generic 3-axis 4-button controller.

Thanks.
