Frozen/unusable secondary display after turning it back on.

Hey there.

I'm having trouble with my current configuration of xorg.

The display adapter is an ATI Radeon HD 4650 with version 11.8 of the proprietary drivers.

DVI: LCD monitor @ 1920x1080.
HDMI: Flat panel TV @ 1360x768.

HDMI output is connected to a Pioneer receiver which forwards the signal to the TV.

When I cut the power to the TV (completely off, not stand-by) and turn the TV back on again, the resolution on the TV is 1920x1080 and whatever is on the display is frozen and the mouse pointer will not move over to the desktop on the TV.

If I put the TV in stand-by, everything works fine when I turn it back on.

The reason I am reluctant to be satisfied with "what works" is because I have a Master/Slave function on the power outlet. When I put the receiver in stand-by, the power to all other connected devices is cut, and thus easily can control the entire rig including lighting with one remote. This is handy when used with the receivers sleep timer.

Does anyone know how I can force the HDMI output to stay on even though there is nothing "listening" on the other end?

I've got that card. pcie or agp? It's one of the best on OSS. The difference with proprietary may not be worth the trouble.

As you are on closed source undocumented drivers, the only move is to post on phoronix.com forums where developer spit 'support' at you and ask them. There is some setup program with Catalyst, and maybe that has a box you can tick to get the effect you desire.

Heh. Thanks for the info. I'll have a go at it over there.

Btw, I don't have to use the closed source drivers. Would you know which options to tickle in the open drivers to get the desired effect?

Forgot to mention that the card is PCI-E and that I've been through the CCC program a couple of times and can't find the desired option.

I feel fairly sure your Pioneer thing is in the way. I'd wire that TV in directly and try it before farting about with the pc. Transferring to open source is easy enough, and your Xorg stuff is about monitors is the same. Driver is different.

The problem is when there is no power flowing trough the TV at all.

If I allow the TV enough power to remain in stand-by there's no trouble. But when the power is cut completely and turned back on again, the video card starts probing the TV regardless of the settings in xorg.conf. For some reason it settles on 1920x1080 and in the process borks the desktop area.

All I want is to force output to 1360x768 regardless of what is or isn't at the other end...

The only thing I can suggest is putting in the Display section of xorg.conf into xorg.conf.d and only giving it the one mode. X may still do what it likes, and we are not able to do much about that, because X knows better than us :-/.
