Nov 2019 is extremely dated? The last post in that thread is a few hours old.

I tried the vi edits suggested via the link, but some of the files (e.g. /etc/X11/xorg.conf) do not exist there. Also, I had trouble following the instruction in the link.

computersavvy's suggestion "The best solution I have seen is to install the nvidia drivers instead of relying on the nouveau drivers for nvidia. That requires running X instead of wayland (which will happen automatically), then in most cases everything just works for those who have posted results." is appreciated but where do I get the correct nvida driver and I don't understand "running X".

I didn't mean you should blindly do what's in that post. I believe this thread at nvidia forums has all information to get it working, but you have to adjust it for your needs and also, as computersavvy mentioned, watch out for some info which may be outdated.

I could not find /etc/X11/xorg.conf - it's not in my version of Ubuntu 20.04.

I will search for the correct version of Nvidia driver ... however I don't know what you mean by X vs. wayland. Do you happen to know what/where the nvidia driver is?

There are 2 different graphics managers to handle the video. The newer one still under development is wayland. The old, tried and true, reliable one is X, also known as X11, and they both handle all the graphics on your system, but wayland and the nvidia drivers do not play well together so the system runs X when you use the nvidia driver. It can run wayland when the less capable nouveau driver is used for the nvidia graphics card.

The nvidia driver may be available from your distro or affiliates. With Fedora and others like it, it is available from rpmfusion.org.

The nvidia driver is available directly from nvidia. Just follow the install instructions and confirm it supports your hardware first.

Yes, and that does not mean the solution is there, especially with the hardware and software changes in the last year and half.

Do you have a laptop using the dual GPU design? Is one of them nvidia? What worked for you?

I have that type laptop and the nvidia drivers fixed problems caused by nouveau and wayland.

From the Fedora forum I found a thread that had the following link:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Bi...erHowto/Nvidia

It provides for a download of the Nvidia driver but I can't determine which of the downloads is the correct one for my Ubuntu 20.04 installation.

Ta DA! I found, downloaded and installed the nividia driver for this distro. After configuring it .. all is working (that I've tested). This is the link which provided the step by step guidance: https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/ubuntu.../#verification

I was just going to suggest this link
https://linuxize.com/post/how-to-nvi...-ubuntu-20-04/
when I saw your post about success.

For others that may have similar problems the answer I found was with a quick search for
"how to install nvidia drivers in ubuntu 20.04"
