Exclamation external hard drive linux question

mounting an external maxtor 5000 with the following fstab line:

/dev/sda1 /mnt/hd vfat auto,user,ro 0 0

mounts fine and i can read it from rox when i run under root.

MY QUESTION:
i want to be able to read the drive under my user account and when i try to access it through rox not under root it throws errors... file doesn't exist or rox can' access. how do i set it so i can read through rox from a user account?
