Hi.
Very nearly any normal (internal IDE) CDRW/DVDRW drive will work perfectly. Buy a cheaper drive and spend a bit on decent media (especially for backups). I'm using a no-name DVD-/+RW drive on Fedora 2, and I've never burned a coaster yet (my choice of cheap media has caused me problems though...).
k3b is quickly becoming (has become?) the favourite GUI app for burning CDs and DVDs. There's no cron-like features, though. I used to use a script I put together myself for doing automated backups, but it had no GUI.
