DVD and DVD-RW devices

Distro: Slackware-current (upgraded from Slackware 10.2)
Kernel: Linux 2.6.14.5 (compiled by myself)

----

I have some troubles on getting my DVD-RW drive to work. It's device is /dev/hdd while my other DVD drive's is /dev/hdc.

The /dev/cdrom and /dev/dvd are links to /dev/hdc but there are no links to /dev/hdd so I put this to my fstab:
Code:
/dev/hdd /mnt/dvdrw iso9660 noauto,user 0 0
When I tried to burn stuff with K3B, it didn't detect it. I can mount it thou.

How do I set up my DVD-RW to work and how do I get /dev/hdc linked to /dev/cdrom0 and /dev/hdd linked to /dev/cdrom1?

You might try adding rw after user:

/dev/hdd /mnt/dvdrw iso9660 noauto,user,rw 0 0

The drive shouldn't be mounted when burning to it so putting the read/write option in fstab doesn't really make a difference.

Does slackware use udev? check to see if there is a program called udevinfo. You can also check for a directory called udev located in /etc

If you're using udev, have a look at this: http://www.reactivated.net/writing_udev_rules.html
That should help you get the symlinks set up the way you want, as well as making nice symlinks for devices like cameras and flashdrives

I'm not familiar with k3b, i assume it's just a frontend for growisofs, mkisofs and cdrecord. Do you have ide-scsi emulation compiled in the kernel? If so it's not needed anymore in the 2.6 kernels. All you need is ide-cd(or ide-cdrom?) and you can refer to your burner through the /dev/hdx device. If ide-scsi is compiled in it'll take over so either remove it or look up the options to pass the kernel at boot to stop it from taking over your burner

Hope this helps.

dmartins,

thanks, I think I'll be needing this information later when I install Slackware this weekend.
