Dual Monitors with extended desktop on laptop running FC8

I am running FC8 on my Sony Vaio laptop. I want to add a monitor so that I can run an extended desktop. My video card is an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100. I know it can handle a dual monitor expanded desktop becasue I am running it in windows.

When I plugged in the monitor Linux recognized the second monitor but only displayed a twin image of my desktop. I tried using the GUI to set up the display, I selected dualhead and extended view but now when I try to load linux my screens are black.

So I guess my first question is how do I get back to my original display settings so I can see an image on my main screen?

Second how can I set up my monitor so I can extend the desktop?

The first monitor is my laptop screen (1280 x 800) and my second monitors is a ViewSonic (1600 x 1200)

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

hmmm.. to get back to your original setup, have you tried booting into safemode, and re-running the application to have just one screen? I'm not familiar with fc8, do they used sax2 as well? If they do, then in safemode, you could run "sax2" with root privaledges to try and reset the screen.

Linux Intel graphics drivers rock!

you can just use xrandr on the command line. That will let you customize all your display settings to the nth degree (you can even mirror one monitor, only upside-down and offset by a specified pixel number). The man pages will give you all the options you need.
