Driver probs' for Ubuntu Jaunty Nvidia card.

The 'hardware drivers' thing under /system/admin tells me that no propietary drivers are enabled and it suggests nvidia version 180 but it doesn't let me click anything to select the driver and if I click 'activate' nothing seems to change, until I reboot and then the system is broken, only way to fix it is to boot into safe mode and select 'fix graphics problems' which puts me back to the original setting. All I'm trying to do is run Second Life which used to run fine on my old computer with the ATI card, now all I get is 'window creation error'.

This is the output from the terminal, (I know it's long but I've no idea what's relevant):-

eric@eric-desktop:~/second_life/SecondLife-i686-1.23.5.136262$ ./secondlife

I have had great success using drivers from nvidia-vdpau ppa. Go here for info on setting up repository. I would suggest removing any other drivers using synaptic and rebooting before actual installation. Reboot after install and right-click desktop, select "change desktop background" and on "visual effects" tab select "extra" and allow jockey to do it's thing.

I'm currently using 185.xx but now 190.xx are out of beta.

Hi, thanks for the response. I've done as you suggest, I've now got Nvidia 180 and 185 available under /admin/hardware drivers but neither will activate! if I click the button to the left nothing happens (I thought it would tick or something), and clicking activate does nothing either, I haven't rebooted yet but I bet I'll need to fix graphics from safe mode again.

It was all going so well too!

If I run the Nvidia X server settings tool I get:-

You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.

Tried doing what it said but no luck.

I was right, I had to boot into recovery mode again.

Question

Can you post content of your xorg.conf file? (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) Here is the pertinent section of mine:
Code:
Section "Device"
	Identifier "Configured Video Device"
	Driver	"nvidia"
	Option	"NoLogo"	"True"
EndSection

Question

Check in synaptic for any other installed drivers and uninstall them. What happens when you select extra on the video effects tab? Did you reboot between steps?

All I have is:-

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously
# in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings
# here are ignored.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
EndSection

Try replacing in your xorg.conf this section:
Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
EndSection
with this:
Code:
Section "Device"
	Identifier "Configured Video Device"
	Driver	"nvidia"
	Option	"NoLogo"	"True"
EndSection
just above that add:
Code:
Section "Module"
        Load	"glx"
EndSection
command:
Code:
gksudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Make a backup copy first! Make sure you have the packages referenced above installed.

Hi Lidex

No luck I'm afraid. I have libgl1-mesa-glx installed and the kernel source for Nvidia-180 which I'm guessing is the packages you're referring to, I've tried the source for 185 as well. The change to xorg generates the same issue as before. When it drops to the shell on bootup I notice it says something like 'no screens found' and 'cannot start xserver', hopefully this means more to you than it does to me!

Alright, do me a favor and make sure in synaptic these packages are installed:
Code:
nvidia-common
jockey-gtk
jockey-common
nvidia-settings
nvidia-180-libvdpau
nvidia-180-kernel-source
nvidia-180-modaliases
nvidia-glx-180
(enter nvidia into quick search box) and if not, install them.

In terminal:
Code:
gksudo nautilus
Find your xorg.conf file and rename xorg.old. Close everything out and reboot.

Open jockey(Hardware Drivers) and click on entry for version 180 in upper section.Click on the line of text that reads "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 180)" and jockey should initiate it for you. Reboot.

No luck

Hi Lidex

Everything was installed, I also added Nvidia-kernel-common and even Nvidia-glx-dev for good luck but no change! I Really am confused by this, I've attached a s/shot of 'hardware drivers', does this look right? If I click the driver line the button to the left doesn't tick or anything like that, and clicking activate just asks for admin' password then seems to download a bit of something but still stays at 'driver not activated'. But then on reboot my system has to have graphics fixed from recovery mode so something has happened.

I do appreciate your help on this, I just wish the damn thing would work!

Question

OK, try this then. Re-install these packages:
Code:
libgl1-mesa-glx
xserver-xorg-core
Now right-click on your desktop, select "change desktop background" and on the "visual effects" tab select the radio buton for "extra". If that doesn't work go back to jockey and try to activate the recommended driver again.
This has worked flawlessly for me in jaunty - thought about upgrading?

I am using Jaunty!

I've done as you suggest but enabling 'extras' just gets me 'Desktop Effects could not be Enabled', no change when I try jockey.

I'm getting to the stage where I'm thinking of a fresh install, when is the next version out?

Thanks again
