Hello guys, I have newly switched to Linux and I am really happy about the choice!
The only problem I am having is getting the 3D acceleration working for my ATI Radeon 9500 (yes, yes... bad choice, but I bought it before thinking about switching to Linux...)
I am using Suse 9.2 (kernel 2.6.8, xorg 6.8.1, kde 3.3) and ATI doesn't have drivers for X.org. The only easy choicece I seem to have is to try the DRI drivers. Unfortunatelly the freedesktop.org website (were the daily snapshots were available) recently got compromised and sincee then the usual snapshot location seems unavailable (link found on DRI sourceforge project page).
Any other placee to get the snapshots? Should I give it a try with compiling the DRI cvs sources (seems hard)?
... or should I just let go and get a better supported nVidia ? (expensive solution)
Ok, it seems freedesktop.org is all up and running but the new location of the DRI snapshots is
freedesktop DOT org/dri/snapshots/
Unfortunatelly my particular card is not supported in the snapshots and it seems that I have to use the CVS sources as explained in
r300 DOT sourceforge DOT net
Anyone have any experience with compiling the CVS sources? The informations seems so scattered...
No, I haven't been able to do it. It seems that even the DRI drivers are not supporting that particular card.
I had to throw money at the problem and upgrade the card. Now I have an nVidia 6800 card, and 3D acceleration worked flawlessly from the first boot.
Sad to see that ATI is not so up to speed in the Linux field.
But, I was referring to the DRI snapshots, I've been looking for those puppies for a while now. it would seem like they might have been compromised and taken out of the freedesktop.org download site. Anybody know when they are going to be available again?
Although I think that nvidia is a better choice for you anyway if you are running linux. As fas as I'm concerned, I'm dealing w/ an embedded chip and I can't just switch to an nVidia card ;(...
Good to see that you have your stuff working, I can't wait to be able to say the same thing .
Yes, I became aware of the R300 project, but the site and instructions don't seem to be kept very well, or at least for a newbie like me it seemed way too much trouble.
As for the DRI snaps the original site was compromised, than a few days later I was able to find everything in freedesktop DOT org/dri/snapshots/ as I explained in my previous post.
Now it looks like the team has taken down those snapshots aswell, saying they will be available soon in the 'new' site. I really don't know when and where they will come back up.
