Thank you all very much. I understand so much more after a week or so of messing around. When the ethernet wouldn't work under Windows Xp either, I determined that the device was simply not working at all so I plugged in a wireless USB adapter and it connected immediately. I've since shelved that machine and am currently learning on something more up-to-date.
Thank you all again for patiently sharing your knowledge. As unlikely as it may seem to some, this thread really did help me a lot. Truly noob, "first day stuff" instructions have proven difficult to find.
