difference between i386 and i686

ok, i have an amd athlon xp 1800+, now i was under the impression that it is a 386 family proc. now i recently had to reload my system due to a hard disk crash, and this time i compiled my own kernel. Before, i just installed slackware and left it as is. it had my proc as a 686 processor. this time around i set it to a 386 becuase i thought that is what it was. some one told me that my problem installing video drivers may be due becuase i need to be compiled for 586 or higher.

So i have 2 questions, is the athlong really 386? and if not would it really affect my drivers if it isnt set to 686??

it probably is i686 - i386 is very old now. i guess a lot of drivers will use intructions in the i686 instruction set, so you'd probably be best off using i686 (as its backwards compatable with i386).

athlon is i686... i'm not sure about your driver issue, though...

ok thanks, yea the kde config says my machine is i686, but my kernel thing has i386 slected. idk y lol, but i dont really have a problem. i just want my radeon drivers to install i get this error when runing ./make_install

root@brian:/lib/modules/fglrx# ./make_install.sh
- creating symlink
- recreating module dependency list
- trying a sample load of the kernel module
FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.11.7/kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.ko): Operation not permitted
failed.
