Dial-Up Internet

I have recently purchased Mandrake 10.1 Powerpack for AMD 64. I have
got an external modem that worked fine with SuSE 9.1 and Mandrake 8.0.
When I click connect on the Network Monitoring the modem dials up but
while it is doing this, Network Monitoring says that it hasn't connected after 19 seconds every time, the modem stays connected for a second or two then disconnects.
I've tried resetting all the details of the connection but no luck. Is there a time out limit?
What Can I Do?

as soon as u get disconnected
check the last log
for the last log run this

tail /var/log/messages

and see if u can get anything
