device dev/sda5 ignoring

Hello guys,

I'm using opensuse10.2 with kernel 2.6.18. to install mipl i need to patch the kernel to 2.6.16. i did so but after rebooting the system it doesn't boot up with the newly installed kernel giving this message:

Resuming device dev/sda5 not found (ignoring)
Waiting for device dev/sda5 to appear ...... not found

and hangs. the previous kernel (2.6.1 is ok. using hdd sata and here's the disk configuration:

Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80000000000 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9726 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 5 40131 de Dell Utility
/dev/sda2 * 6 4581 36756720 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda3 4582 9726 41327212+ f W95 Ext'd (LBA)
/dev/sda5 4582 4761 1445818+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda6 4762 6762 16073001 83 Linux
/dev/sda7 6763 9726 23808298+ 83 Linux

as you can see sda5 is the partition where suse boots up from.

any remedy is very much appreciated.

sda5 is a swap partition. Linux cannot be installed there.

suse 10.2 is installed indeed with the default kernel and working alright. the problem starts with kernel patch, when i install 2.6.16 kernel on it. another point is that a fresh install with lower patches also success.
