I just got a Dell Latitude D610, and this is my first time trying Linux on a laptop (or actually, ever owning a laptop). It came with Windows XP, and I rolled over that with Debian testing (net install). I followed a guide from the Laptops on Linux site (http://home.comcast.net/~canez/d610/ - very helpful). After following the guide, just about everything is up and running. However, I have one problem left: the screen won't come back on after I close the laptop.

I configured ACPI, and I figured out the button messages it sends (Stand by is "sleep," power is "power," hibernate does nothing, and pressing the lid button sends "lid"). Pressing any of the buttons but lid works fine, and so does manually suspending by running hibernate or writing to the ACPI states in /sys or /proc. However, if I press the lid button, the screen turns off (no matter how I configure ACPI) and won't come back on. Everything else works - it properly receives and dispatches the event.

If I tell ACPI to do nothing when the lid button is pressed, it still turns off the LCD, but anything I type works. I can shutdown the computer blindly and start it back up again, and then it works.

Anybody have any idea how I would get this to stop?

Dell Inspiron 6000's have the same problems due to the fact that they have strange drives (SATA, or something like that!), maybe this is the same sort of thing.

The SATA drive problem can be fixed with several patches to libata, which I have applied (they can be found from the page I linked in my original post). The drive spins back up after the laptop is opened - it's just the LCD. Like I said, I can type and interact fine, I just can't see what I'm doing.

I am having the same problem and I don't think it is the SATA hard drive. The LCD panel does not want to come back after being turned off by the lid switch. Any solutions, this problem is driving me nuts. I have Slackware 10.2 installed.

And I have Fedora Core 5, cannot get hibernate or suspend to work properly, hibernate is preferred, however.
