dell 8400 usb problems

I just installed Fedora Core 1 on my Dell 8400. I am trying to mount a usb keychain. I do the usual method of mounting a keychain by typing the command: mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb. When I go to open it up nothing is there. I tried doing a modprobe usb-storage and when I look at the var/log/messages file I don't see anything with usb. This is strange to me because I just installed Fedora Core 1 on an IBM T41 and usb works fine there. To me it looks like usb isn't even enabled on this box even though the drivers are there. I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem with this and they know the fix.

What does "dmesg" look like? My first guess is that its an IRQ issue in that FC isn't loading proper acpi support for the machine so all of the goofier pci devices, which includes the USB hub, are all wonked out...

Cheers,

Finegan

When I checked out dmesg all I got was some information saying that it found the usb ports and it found the drivers. I also did a grep for hotplug and nothing showed up on that. Any ideas?

I'm sorry man, I should have been more clear, I kinda need to see "dmesg" if I'm going to be of any help, you can paste the whole thing in here

This is weird, usb-storage is loaded right? The USB ports are fine, nothing I mentioned before is actually an issue, scsi emulation is obviously working right... Does /sbin/lsusb even see the device as attached?

Cheers,

Finegan

I'm trying to look and see if sbin/lsusb sees it, but it is not a text file. How do I open it up to read it? I tried vi and all I get are characters, no words.

Hi saipi1

lsusb is a command - short for 'list usb' that should list the usb ports and attached devices.

Just type /sbin/lsusb at a terminal command prompt. The /sbin part is the directory that the command resides in.

You need to type this first since it is unlikely that this directory is in your path of folders that should be checked for commands when you enter them at the command prompt. Phew, hope that last bit made sense!

Anyway, type /sbin/lsusb at a terminal command prompt and post the output here.

Cheers,

Steve

Ok, after I tried mounting the keychain with the command mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb I still got the error "mount: /dev/sda1 is not a valid block device" I then did what you said by checking the lsusb and I got the following response:
Bus 005 Device 001: 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 001: 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: 0000:0000

I've tried this keychain on other Fedora core 1 laptops and it works fine. Once it's mounted on the laptop I get the following:
Bus 004 Device 001: 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 002: 0781:7108 SanDisk Corp.
Bus 003 Device 001: 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: 0000:0000

So I know now it's not the usb keychain. Anyone have any ideas on what's going on here?

Well, your machine that's having the problem can't actually see the device as being attached. It looks as though it can see the usb bus though.

I have to admit, I don't know what the problem is. There aren't any obvious errors previous outputs you have posted.

I had a similar problem with a machine of mine a while ago, and traced it to something to do with the kernel not calling the hotplug program, or the hotplug program itself but the machine had a new HD and install before I ever resolved the problem.

All I can say is 'Any bright ideas Fin?'

Oh yeah, what might be worth checking is the installation on your desktop machine the same version of FC that is on the laptop? And do they show the same kernel version? Issue
Code:
uname -r
to check which kernel version on each machine.

Cheers,

Steve

Both machines have the same kernel version because I used the same image for both machines. They are both kernel version 2.4.22-1.2115.nptl. This is the base kernel for Fedora Core 1. Both the laptop and the desktop have this version. I just don't understand why the laptop works and the desktop doesn't?

The only thing I can think of left is that the kernel might be old enough so there's something funky going on with USB. FC's kernel patch backporting is usually bugfix oriented as opposed to feature adding... maybe a 2.6? Or a hand compile of 2.4.28, but like Steve said, all the usual suspects are accounted for. If it works for one and not the other its obviously not the device, so its something hardware specific, and I've always gotten the best mileage out of upgrading kernels around the problem.

Cheers,

Finegan
