Debian 10 will not boot out of grub after RAM upgrade

Hi everyone,

I recently got two 4GB memory sticks for my computer, which already has 2 4GB sticks. When I boot up with all four sticks in, I boot into grub, and then when I try to boot the actual OS it crashes and says I have a kernel failure.
However, when I use three of the sticks, it works perfectly fine. This works when using both of the new sticks and one of the old, as well as vice-versa. I might have used every combination except probably one at a time.

I have tried reinstalling, that doesn't seem to have done much, I have tried using the memtest86+ thing with 16GB, and while I'm not too sure how it works, it displayed 16GB and the test bar filled consistently for about a half hour until I exited.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's the hardware on my computer:

G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) (I bought 2 before and 2 later)

ASUS TUF B450-Plus Gaming

Ryzen 5 3600

GeForce GTX 1050 ti

Let me know if there's anything else I should mention. Thanks!

Edit: I ran the memtest86+ again and it seems like it went through everything without a hitch and started looping. I wasn't paying close attention so this is just how I guess it works.

until you get a better reply is your RAM compatible, asus has a list but you will need your ripjaws part number

https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/m...Processors.pdf

2) I appreciate you are saying they are exactly the same but are they?

Maybe you have slighly diff speeds or something which makes them not pair?

3) Have you looked at your bios settings?

Maybe after you install new ram you have to load defaults and then do a reboot?

So it seems like the two pairs of sticks are not the same model, the old ones are DDR4-3200 and the new pair is DDR4-2133. I also looked at the list you posted, and its says that there is a model that has part number:

F4-3200C16D-8GVKB, while my old one is F4-3200C16D-8GVRB, are these two similar enough?

There didn't seem to be any comparable sticks to my new pair on that list, although I think that this model is very new, so I don't know if that has a factor in this.

I tried to set the speed to 2133, and it didn't work. Is there any way I can salvage this or should I just buy new ram?

btw, thanks for responding!

The theory is it is supposed to automatically drop to the 2133, the lowest speed in the system, for compatibility. As you have seen this is just not true with your board though with the memtest working it seems to work at that low level but not when it gets to load an OS. Would be interesting to see if it would boot windows. Your best bet is to get exactly matching 8gb sticks really if your board supports them and use two of them to get your 16gb and eliminate any problems with trying to get four working together. Of course getting a matched pair for your original ram is an option to try too.

Ok so I looked at it and I guess it did just run on 2133 the whole time, I just didn't notice. I will probably take your advice and just buy more ram, but I'm going to check for some more things first. Thank you!

Size and speed doesn't matter, see user manual p. 1-8... however CAS latency must be the same.
