CPU activity readings

I'm a little concerned about my 99% - 100% activity CPU readings in Gkrellm. The activity just doesn't go away - only a reboot does the job. Top leaves me cold - I'm not experienced enough to id what is causing the problem. What should I look out for?

Suspicions - I think that the excessive and sustained activity occurs after my partner has been on www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies - I really think certain pages have a negative effect on my system. The CPU over-activity seems to occur when this site has been visited. Top indicated that operamotifwrapp was very hungry - but this means nothing to me.

Please help. I don't want to reboot - I want to have my box up for a record month!!!

No need to re-boot. Kill the process that is taking all the time.

Have you tried other broswers?

Might be hung subprocesses, check for java_vm
or the like ... in top, just look for the processes that
are highest in the list. Anything that consumes heaps
of CPU and isn't X is a candidate...

Once found, kill it :)
in top press k, enter the offending process' ID and a
9 as the signal to kill it with ...

Cheers,
Tink
